So if a rich man is rewarded by God, then Jesus saying it is very difficult for a rich man to get to Heaven stunned His audience, leading them to ask "who then can be saved" to which Jesus responded "for men this is impossible but for God all things are impossible." So Jesus is also declaring that man cannot save himself by his own efforts (i.e. you don't get into Heaven by being "a good person"), salvation must come through His sacrifice on the Cross.
