Simply put, you are experiencing the result of critical race theory indoctrination. Critical race theory is a cancer and seeks to divide people. That division—sowing disunity among Americans—is the only way it can propagate freely.
You pose a great question... what HAS happened to people? And to our country? I've posted several long-ass comments over time detailing the dangers of critical race theory and the need to understand it in order to identity it and stop it... because it is not easy to understand. That is purposefully done so it can infiltrate various groups... and by the time you realize something is wrong, it is too late. But those posts never seem to never get any traction, lol, so I will not repeat them here. Hey, I get it, it is an obtuse subject, and it feels like we can just ignore critical race theory or just call it dumb... but that's playing right into its hands. It is the hidden danger in our society today, and there needs to be active counter-pressure on its spread.

This definitely resonates with me. I've worked in education for a decade and to reframe your message a bit... I think it has to do with accountability. In my professional experience, I've seen a lack of accountability and following through with intended consequences.
I'm not sure how to describe it... but I feel like we've become a mostly soft and mushy society. If a rule is broken and there are to be consequences, many people want to shy away from that and follow the route of, "Oh, we don't have to really be all that severe... it isn't such a big deal." Perhaps it is conflict-aversion, laziness, something else, a combination, or what have you.
I just find that people have difficulties with being direct and following through... and a growing acceptance of being walked upon or being a cog in a system that walks upon others. To go back to your example of the woman who showed up to question something... she was being direct, and understood there are boundaries in place (like not having pornographic and inappropriate materials being assigned as homework). She identified the boundary was broken and needed to be addressed. I imagine she did not let up until it was addressed.
And for those that are the cogs in the system, they're not particularly mastermind geniuses looking to destabilize society with a grand plan (although there are a noticeable few that do approach their work within the system like that... see followers of critical theories). They just want to get away with what they can because that's the environment they're in. And visibility is their enemy. So as long as they can stay in the background and not be noticed, not have a spotlight on them, not have been held accountable by anyone, then they're happy just coasting along in the turd stew.
That's what we need: accountability and follow-through. I don't think people realize the power they have if they just use it. You do not have to be angry or confrontational. You just need to be direct with your words and request accountability.
Sadly, as I have seen first-hand, this soft, mushy approach to life is being taught directly and indirectly to our children through schools and the media.
I just read this article and I love the pathetic and flaccid ending where it is basically stops pretending to be a news article and clearly is trying to talk directly to those doing this by saying, "this won't do anything, please stop."

Yeah, I would say that is accurate for Q believers. It is loyalty to the "plan" and how tantalizing it appears. I get it, I would love for such a plan to happen, and especially if a person feels particularly helpless, it can be soothing to believe this plan will be executed and to feel a sense of purpose in scouring the day's events and finding connections to the Q messages or drops or whatever they're called. But... it just is not the case.
Also, while I find them to be delusional, I do appreciate Q believe's dedication towards it and how much time they spend reading and making connections and doing all this numerology nonsense. I hope that at some point they can channel those skills to making a change in the real world rather than sitting around on the internet waiting for "the plan."

I think when you invest in a belief so much, it is quite difficult to let it go. I definitely have compassion for them as opposed to so many people on here that seem to be angry with them.
