By showing up without a gun, you're trading away legal risk for physical risk. The left would be committing political suicide by shooting and killing unarmed people. If you're itching for some kind of shit-hits-the-fan civil war scenario, this would be one of the fastest ways to achieve it. That's a really good point and I think the solution is to not form any kind of official organized group, especially not with leaders and a hierarchy or their own symbols & uniforms like the Proud Boys did.
