I think hindsight is 20/20. In that situation he followed his training. I can only fault him for not releasing the suspect once he went unconscious and the other officer couldn't find a pulse. That said, in testimony from the state's witnesses we heard that it was not unheard of to restrain a suspect in medical distress until paramedics arrive, and suspects can regain consciousness and cause trouble if not properly restrained.
The narrative that this cop wanted to kill somebody that day is insane. It has already cost lives and millions of dollars in property damage. Fake news is the enemy of the people.
With the facts he had at the time, he seems to have followed his training protocols. This was an accidental death exacerbated by the suspect's lack of compliance, poor health, and drug use. The mob clearly did not help the situation either.
