I'm no Obama fan, but I was in college at that election and the hype he had was crazy. So many liberals and independents were crazy about him. McCain sucked and generated no buzz or hype. Heya. My family moved to a south middle TN small town 3 years ago and we love it here. The area around Columbia is nice, reasonably priced and big Trump fans. I work real estate near Dickson county as well and it's pretty nice over there. Vacationed in Cookeville 5 years ago and we really like that area as well.

In short, there is a lot of nice areas and it kind of depends on where you end up working. A hour from Nashville gives you a lot of options, but so would Knoxville and Chattanooga. I don't know much about the Memphis area though.
