I also feel like this whole event was a display of power and control over the population, maybe the deep state felt like the citizens needed a reminder of who really runs the show. Every politician for eternity has been terrified of receiving bad press, so politicians bend over backwards to try and conform, to try an appease the press. Under normal circumstances the media have an unbelievable amount of power and sway. Trump changed that, and he's not just some random rogue politician, he's the fucking president. Their world has been turned upside down, even 4+ years later they still haven't adjusted course or found a new trick, they're sticking with their age old tactic.

The general rule or general understanding was that you need to stay on the good side of the press so you can receive some good publicity in order to win an election, but Trump knows he can win without them, he can speak to the public directly. He doesn't need to water down his messages or pander to the press.
