Unpopular opinion: I'd Rather all the major population states (that appear to have internal conflict) be broken up into *many* new states so long as those new regions were culturally cohesive, even if it meant more senate seats for democrats.

Don't know if you know this but in az independent registration is HUGE!!!!!! in AZ. It is literally 1/3rd of the registered voters the last I checked. So if 800k voted were repubs, 800k were dems, then 800k were independent.
