If the Wuhan Lab 'gain of function' research theory is correct, and it is man made, it would technically be new, I guess, but you're right, there have probably been millions of very sick old people who succumbed to very similar corona viruses that were the final opportunistic infection from a common nursing home/hospital bug that they ever got. Coronaviruses, instead of rhinoviruses, are the cause of colds ~15-20% of the time. A virus that's deadly spreads less because a dead host is not an effective spreader. Therefore the less deadly mutations "win", and survive to go on.
