The people best suited to lead want no part of it, while the most worthless of the communities salivate at the chance to have a title to lord about. The towns in my neck of the wood do not pay council members or mayors, yet the battles for them are dirty and frequently viciously personal. The winners almost always consist of yes men and a bully or two. Occasionally someone decent manages to get in, only to be ostracized and overruled by the ones who think they now own the town.
Austin is a shithole and an $$$ one at that. Calirefugees are driving the prices up all over the Austin and DFW area as well.

USPS is garbage. They won't even deliver the mail to the houses in my town. You have to come down to pick it up, and good luck to you if someone sent something to your street address instead of the PO box because half the time they'll send it back. The other half they'll put a nasty note in your box telling you mail has to have the box number on it because they don't know who has what address.... the fact they know where to put the nastygram kinda negates that argument.
