He was stalling for time but Houston’s Army was ready and anxious to fight and Houston could not stall any longer waiting on the US to send troops. Santa Ana’s army suffered many losses on their way to battle the Texan army that by the time they got there Texas was able to defeat him.
The Alamo was a Mexican blunder. They didn’t need to take it. Santa Ana was arrogant and decided to fight. Though he took the Alamo he suffered serious losses that would cost him the war.
