Witness tampering is usually a misdemeanor but if someone has a history of harassment of witnesses then it could be charged as a class c felony. I know what they charge isn't always what they can prove. He would have had to have been charged and then made whatever request to a witness the FBI is alleging. If it is something like person (A) was involved with his situation and he told them "Don't ever speak of this to anyone". Person (A) turned witness in order to save their ass and told prosecutors they fear for their safety because of prior comments...If I were on the jury or a judge, it wouldn't hold water under a charge of witness tampering.
