OP, you would want something of larger caliber eventually but 100 rounds of 9mm just cost me $70 shipped. That’s not a lot of practice for that money. Not a great time to be stockpiling ammo. Even 12 cents a round for .22LR is a ripoff but you’ll feel it less so.
I probably would get a Marlin or Ruger rifle vs. a pistol for your sake but it’s up to you
