Taiwan separated from China in 1949. It's been a de facto soverign nation since then, and is already recognized by many countries as such.
Hong Kong is still officially Chinese territory, and the Red Chinese wouldn't hesitate to start throwing nukes if we tried to pry it loose from their greasy fingers.

It's not about convenience so much as, we don't have anywhere else to shop. In rural areas our options are basically walmart or nothing. I am lucky that I have an aldi nearby, so I do as much of my shopping there as possible and use Walmart for anything Aldi doesn't carry. There are no mom and pop stores, or small locally owned grocery chains. It's literally choosing between big evil box store corporations that are all the same.
Can confirm. The small PA town where I grew up used to have mom & pop stores on every block. When I was a kid (in the Fifties), there were two of them within two minutes' walking distance. My mother was always sending me to one or the other for staples like bread, margarine and milk. For more complex grocery needs, there was an A&P store in town, but it was a lot further away.
All those little hole-in-the-wall grocery stores were converted into apartments decades ago. Even the A&P is gone, now.
I once took a shit over Denver. I just couldn't hold it in till San Francisco.
You are absolutely right. I live within driving distance of a large U (I used to teach there), and the things you see piled outside the dorms and student apartments would astonish you. There are people who drive around town at the end of semester collecting that stuff and reselling it.
Once, at my local shooting range, I met one of the guys who did garbage collection for the town. He would supplement his income with the proceeds from reselling student castoffs.
It goes without saying that almost all the students are from wealthy families, and are wasteful beyond belief.
The age of grocery stores in small towns has been dead for a while.

The solution at the moment is leadership. You can't have a war without leadership and no one is stepping up because no one wants to step on Trumps toes.
Your point about our lack of national leadership is spot on, but I don't think it's because "no one wants to step on Trump's toes." I think it's because so few people have the ability to be national leaders. I know I don't. DJT is the first real leader at the national level that we've had for decades.
This needs to be repeated. A lot of us around here are posting bizarre shit because we're all deeply worried and on edge, because we have no idea what's going on behind the scenes. People post "facts" that originate entirely in their imaginations and invent scenarios with little or no connection to the real world.
The only fact of which I'm certain is that we don't know shit about what's unfolding.

The trouble is, we do not have any idea any longer what is disinfo and what isn't. Nothing seems too unreasonable to be impossible; rumors and half-remembered snippets of old internet posts are broadcast as self-evident facts; wishful thinking -- both postive and negative -- is the new standard.
We are all so worn down by the events of the last two months that we're beginning to snap at each others' throats and losing our capacity to believe in anything at all.
Just so much dooming lately. Staying positive & hoping for positive outcomes, even if unrealistic, can't hurt when you need morale.

All I keep hearing, over and over, is "Trump can't use the military option, 'cause I know the military hates him," " Trump won't use the military option, 'cause he said so, didn't you hear?," "Trump isn't gonna use the military option, 'cause I just know he won't..." I get sick of it.
I have no inside information on what DJT is thinking or planning. Nor do I have any inside information on what the various military branches will or won't do when faced with a Presidential order.The uncertainty of not knowing pisses me off to no end, but I don't let myself fantasize that I know things at which I can only guess, let alone post those fantasies on the internet as obvious fact.
President Trump will do what he will do. In the absence of any current statments from him, that is all I -- or any of us -- can know.
