VOAT was maintained by one guy (PutItOut) for the last few years and almost shut it down over cloudflare [and application hosting] costs a couple of years ago. Community did a fund drive [and re-wrote the code to reduce costs] which paid the bills for a while, then an "angel investor" first supported then pulled support for the site. PutItOut had been footing all bills since ~March and shut it down Christmas day.
Theories abound surrounding the "real" reasons but it probably boiled down to a combination of things but the cause was the angel investor pulling out. What began as a project of passion became a PITA.

You are right, there is a long running narrative about Japan + Pollen and masks, but when asked, the referenced Japanese native explained teens and young adults habitually wearing masks as a way to withdraw in Japan's over crowded cities. I don't see anything about planting too many of the same kind of tree though, all the reports are predictably blaming climate change instead. lol

It's not a vaccine either, it's genetic modification via mRNA. I'm all for genetic modification if your other choice is death, but in a 99.9999% survivable situation it's a non-starter for me.
The pharmas are pushing the new mRNA "shingles vaccine" too, claiming 1 in 3 will express shingles. I know ONE person out of my extended family and friends that has ever had shingles and neither the "old" real vaccine nor the new mRNA genetic mod has helped that case.

Duck Duck Go is an anonymity and search aggregate, it searches google, bing, and a number of other crawlers / indexers without storing or sharing your search history. That is it's purpose. Of course it's going to return "lefty" stuff in the news feed but I don't think it's curated as such. Even 4conservative returns fakenews on the "all news" tab.
4Conservative is part of a network of filtered search results but it certainty isn't a conservative organization.
I do agree it would be nice to filter out specific returns but that is perhaps best done in a browser extension, like de-mainstream for Youtube.
