My brother was in Desert Storm. Each day they ran drill after drill in the desert sun in full chemo gear. It was horrible, painful, exhausting and repetitive. Each day was definitely "The Day", until it wasn't. They got up early hoping to see the flurry of activity preparing for the attack. Instead, it was more drills.
He couldn't see the spec ops taking out key infrastructure, or some attorney somewhere refusing to sign off, or some general not convinced that the plan will work. He just woke up annoyed and wondering if it would ever happen.
When the order was given, the battle was sudden, violent and awesome in the display of American might. Entire columns of tanks eliminated in minutes. One of the largest standing armies in the world humiliated in days.
We don't know what is happening behind the scenes in our battle. We have to accept the fact that the good guys might be defeated and we'll never hear a peep of the war. Alternatively, we might wake up to a historic display of American might.

It's pretty simple - willfully believe a lie and you become psychologically dependent upon the liar. The more lies you choose to believe, or the more absurd the lies you choose to believe, and the stronger the dependency becomes. Eventually, your entire identity is tied up in keeping together all the loose ends of the lies you have chosen to believe. It's exhausting and a very shallow, pathetic life.
A terror response to threats to this precarious jumble of lies is what we call "triggering". Triggering is the fear response when a part of one's identity is threatened by the exposing of a willfully accepted lie.
