The rifle, while not havering the standard "jungle" chrome lined barrel had nothing wrong with it. Several poor decision were made primarily on the logistical side of things. Lack of issued cleaning kits as well as last minute changes to long standing army proceduress by " wiz kids" caused the issues.
The famous m1 didnt have a chrome lined barrel either and it was drug all over the pacific and jungle climates as well.
This just means you must take good care of your weapon and keep it clean and will lubed. Wiz kid dipshits claimed it was self cleaning weapon which was clearly proven quickly to be false.
When the early model 601's were given to the SEALs they were well received, they understood the value and importance of maintaining your weapon systems. Draftees on the other hand, not so much.
The early ammo used was changed to a different type of powder which preformed very poorly. The question of ball vs stick powder isn't so much the factor but rather the coatings used in the powder to change the characteristics.
