How would we go about this as a long term solution? Could as many of us as possible set up our own servers like Bitcoin?

I was just thinking. After the 20th, we should make it a goal of our community to ACTIVELY spread the word for people to be switching to other platforms. Free advertising to them, yes, but more importantly to crush Twitter, FB, Google, etc. We can get 40% of Twitter by June if we all worked on a plan together. Just a thought.
