Generally if you want to reward someone for doing a good job you need to do something to stand out.
Not sure your kids teacher qualifies but if everyone is doing this it’s probably best to do something different to encourage them.
I grew up in a poorer city. My mom gave teachers flower arrangements and I was actually embarrassed because I was the only kid bringing gifts in once or twice a year.
These teachers were great and really deserved it.
Half the kids in our class lived in the projects and many of the parents and some of the kids definitely had no appreciation for what these people were doing so gifts at that time definitely stood out.
You’re not at all wrong though about teachers being self-righteous. And certainly in today’s environment it’s tougher to just be nice to someone who was kind to you.

This is likely going to end up as a “sanctuary” situation in at least a couple of states the way this is going.
What the court does in those situations is irrelevant.
But if we can get 10 or more states to object there’s a good chance the court would take note and pretend like they are fair by ruling the entire thing unconstitutional.
This is a good start. But enforcement of this law in Red states and some Blue states needs to be non-existent.
Strongly worded letters are not enough.
