I’m like a carbon copy of you just 10 years behind. S Corp for 20 years, I draw a paycheck and pay a ridiculously low amount relative to current wages. Made smart financial decisions and have the house paid off, all the toys I want, plus, no debt.
Covid hysteria crushed my service contracts in March to about one third. I’ve clawed back to 70% since then, but it’s simply not enough to keep jumping through hoops of red tape to keep the trade name. On January first, I won’t be paying any more licensing fees, “occupational privilege taxes,” or 941’s. Business insurance is also out the window. I’ll be dropping any cost associated with sales tax licensing, too. The margins are razor fuckin’ thin as it is, last thing I need is to pay for the right to not make any money on a product. Besides, with the internet sales being taxed already, it’s like they’re double dipping by forcing me to charge the customer full tax on top of that. I’m paying for a license in every city I do business plus the state. It’s outta control.
You do make an excellent point about the first and second quarter. Considering I always use the last quarter to square the numbers, it woulda been keen to pay nothing in Q1 & Q2 when they need money for others returns. Unlike you, I’ve never skipped my taxes and I’ve been working since 14 years old. Clearly, I was exempt until 18, but never did I feel this reluctant to put forth in taxes. I simply don’t have anything for them to take. They just have to fuck off.

If your simply not paying extra, you aren’t starving the beast. You have to not pay the taxes or you’re not helping. It’s a risk we have to be willing to take.
Yes, claim dependents to minimize your withholding. However, if you claim too many, it will mean you owe money at the end of the year. I’m ok with this scenario, but be aware, it would be prudent to keep savings aside for the potential need to negotiate back taxes. Either way, this is usually cheaper than paying up front and definitely better than giving them a loan for free every year.
