I'm not sure I understand everything in your comment but I think that yes, it is quite fascinating how obsessed people are with trump while there are other leaders who are closer to home she could focus on.
But on the other hand: he ís the president of the US, so some attention is warranted I think. Sorry if i misinterpreted you comment.
it's not even the fake news that is the issue here. It is the lack of news. She is not necessarily misinformed, she's just not informed at all. She didn't eve know who the democratic candidate was for god's sake!
hmm hard to say. A combination of a few things.
I'm sure the the immigration issue we have here in Europe was a big thing that made me start to change my mind slowly. I saw what the immigrants were doing to my country. I saw all the benefits they are getting here, for free... while they are here illegally. And slowly Geert Wilders and his desire for less immigration lo longer seemed so "cold and heartless" as many claim he is. Our open borders are not doing my country any good. Sure, like trump, Wilders makes a few odd statements, but in big lines I began to agree more and more with him.
About 4 years ago we had our Dutch national elections not too long after Trump was announced. I was a brand new voter. It was the first election I could vote in and of course I did what was expected of me and voted left, voted for our Minister President Rutte who has been in power since 2010. I didn't know any better at the time. I was super uneducated about what each party even stood for.
After watching Trump in office for a few months I slowly started to begin seeing that, no matter how much I (at the time) disliked the man, the way he was treated was unfair. Then I laid the link with our own Geert Wilders here, who has been in quite high-level politics FOR YEARS and is standing his ground and not budging while being pelted with hate all this time. And I saw the parallells.
Then I spent 6 months in Australia at a very "free" liberal, leftist university full of SJW's. I met all types of weird people, non-binaries, trans people, the weirdest leftists ever that even I, who was at the time still pretty much left myself, couldn't stand. They made me play the pronoun game. They made me attend compulsory meeting on racial inequality and much more. After a weird as fuck conversation with a nonbinary dude I was so confused something clicked in my brain: THESE PEOPLE WERE NUTS.
So when I returned from Australia I had drifted to a bit more right-of center and once I was past that tipping point and realized how much the Left apparently hated me for it, that only kept pushing me further and further away from the left. The more they hate me, the further to the right I drift.
I may not always agree with Trump, I may not always find him a perfect human being. He has made some gaffes. But the way he is treated is just plain rude. And I don't like that. For that matter alone I will defend Trump, even if I may not quite like what he said at the moment. Because all this dogpiling on one man is just insane to me the same way it is insane when they do it here with Geert Wilders.
been going slow for a while both on the Trump matter and on our own right-wing political parties, which I am considering voting for (which she hates hates hates).
She's not really a nuanced kindof person, so I'll have to take it very slow indeed.
It does feel a bit like what I imagine it could feel like living in a Blue State as a Red voter. Aside from this I've been slowly becoming more open about my expectation that I will be voting for a more right-wing party in our own elections this year. Not quite far right, but more right than she would ever be comfortable with.
Same as you in america have "Trump = Bad" people, my mother very much has a "Geert Wilders = evil" mentality and not much further knowledge.
I feel like she wasn't even aware of the facts before this. She barely had an idea who the democrat candidate was. And when I told her his name my Obama loving mum didn't even have a "penny drops" moment. Facts and stats can't influence her if she doenst listen to them...
B.. b..b..but the statue is WHITE!!! Look how White Michael Jackson was. He's such an evil evil race traitor! Reeee.
Can't speak for America but I know here in the Netherlands women and men have different chances of getting accepted into our top universities depending on the school and the program.
For example Girls have a much higher chance of getting in at the universities of Leiden and Utrecht, mostly Alpha universities that focus on languages, arts and history. At those universities there are also programs for women going into the Medical parts of the university. But I know that my University of Leiden does favor men when it comes to our Law faculty.
University of Wageningen, which is famous for it's studies of Water management, Food sciences and Sustainable Future programs, is mostly all male but it is also a tiny university famous for that one thing only.
Technical Universities like Delft, Eindhoven and Groningen were male dominated for years because they deal in hard sciences mostly, but more and more "female STEM programs are popping up. Which, in theory I applaud, but the important distinction is: girls should not be unfairly kept out based on their sex if their scores warrant entry. It is a whole different matter if things shift too far the other way and boys are being denied entry because of their sex if their grades warrant entry. It should be balanced and not biased either way. I'm all for women in hard science programs, as long as they are there for a reason, not for Ally-points.
University of Amsterdam.... Well I have no clue what they are doing aside form smoking weed but I genuinely dont care. University or Rotterdam is somewhat of an equal split between male and female I guess.
I remember reading 1984 in highschool here in the netherladns as part of a project. We also read Brave New World, which I also loved.
At that age, no matter how good I was at English, 1984 was still a bit too complicated for me. I remember the basics but not the whole story. The concepts of Wrongthink and Doublethink were so foreign to me. But brave New World was easier reading and I still have the book today.
That one also contains some fucked up things! fetuses created in a lab and starved of oxygen to make them into dumb Delta or Epsilon babies as opposed to the smart Alpha's, sex-play for children, everything is corporate and marketed, everyone having a whole slew of sex-partners, old people being sent to colonies. Fucked up man.
I might have to re-read 1984 too.It does certainly feel like we are in a dystopia now.
Biden's statement of "you ain't black [if you dont vote for me]" may have had something to do with that.
A lot of black people who were still very much in the middle between republican or democrat got pissed off because of that and it tipped the scales. Do you have any idea if this influenced your friend?
my parents keep freaking out about "he told people that light can kill coronavirus!!!! Reee" and how insane that is. When I told them that certain public transport agencies are using UV-light to kill virus particles she was taken aback. Trump may have worded his statements a little poorly, but there is truth in them. Sure, maybe regular lightbulbs don't help against the virus. Sure, maybe Trump could have phrased it a little better. But the theory behind it was true and is being used too.
As a non-american I can't vote for Trump. Last election in the Netherlands in 2017 I voted for the man who has been our Minsters president (prime minister) since 2010. I basically did that cause that was expected of me. I knew nothing of politics other than "right bad, left good, Vote Rutte!!"
I conformed to the status quo. It was my first time voting and I had no clue what I was voting for or against. I did do a few voting tests but none of them were obvious. Some of them showed that my opinions were left-of-center but even then there were signs that my answers corresponded quite well with the more christian conservative parties, to the great surprise of my parents, who have always been establishment voters. No right wing parties came up then, but that was probably because I was ignorant.
Now, over 3 years later, the next elections are slowly creeping up on us and I've really changed my mind and read up on things. Those "scary right wing parties" don't seem so scary anymore. Their "violent rhetoric" now just sound like logic to me.
I may not be able to vote Trump, but I can vote for the closest equivalent in my country. No more lefty voting for me!
Maybe not quite a hoax, but definitely grossly overhyped in how fast it spreads. here in the Netherlands it has been almost 2 full weeks since the protest on De Dam. Where probably over 5000 people stood in close proximity without mask
Whereas not a month earlier our national remembrance day of the wars had 0 attendants. Somehow thousand can come to protests but not to honor the deceased of the world wars...
Since it has been almost two weeks we should have been seeing a COVID spike about now. We are not.
So which is it: Is covid a terrifying, killer disease that DEMANDS we all stay at home and wear ridiculous masks, or is it an over hyped attempt at fear mongering. I can believe on or the other.
Either I get to take my stupid masks off and go to church and university as normal again or EVERYONE has to stay at home.
Cuase this whole business of "but protesting is a right" is utter horsecrap. Going to school (as long as you pay tuition) is a right, getting in public transport is a right, goint to church is a right.
They cant pick an choose which rights matter.
Either they give up the hype of Covid or they give all these motherfuckers a super huge fine for breaking social distancing.
Look at Spezz Spazzing out:
"This inconsistency has hurt our trust with our users and moderators and has made us slow to respond to problems. This was also true with r/the_donald, a community that relished in exploiting and detracting from the best of Reddit and that is now nearly disintegrated on their own accord. As we looked to our policies, “Breaking Reddit” was not a sufficient explanation for actioning a political subreddit, and I fear we let being technically correct get in the way of doing the right thing. Clearly, we should have quarantined it sooner."
Dickhead.
They should take a look at the German Minster for Social affairs and public Health. She's probably twice Trumps size but if you comment on her weight and the irony of her being a health-minister you can get pretty much destroyed cause apparently that's fAtShAmInG!!!!
I got on this site about two months ago and never used it cause i din't think it was useful. But today I bookmarked this site and getting ready for the apocalypse on reddit. This place is my bunker now. And I'm not even American. I have no skin in this game. I am literally unable to vote for Trump. But i sure as hell hate how Trump voters and supporters are treated and think the man has some solid ideas. Censoring is not fucking okay. Point me in the direction of the closest Dutch equivalent to Trump and I'll be all set for our own election next year.
I’m still on a 3 day ban for saying not even the real name but “Cia Ericamella”. Clearly the admins did not appreciate my parody of the whistleblowers name. So yeah. Reddit can go kick rocks basically
It is also kinda hard nót to focus on Trump seeing as how much attention the media pays to him. If you watch the 6 'o clock or 8 'o clock news here, you will always always see some new newsflash about trump. Even if you didn't want to pay attention to him the media here wouldn't let you. So it's not entirely my mum's fault I guess, it's the news media that feeds her it. That is where the sneering disdain comes from
