You're not wrong there, but you have to remember the flip side of that coin: you need a whole plethora of steps in-between that 'unqualified' Black family and the seller: buyers agent, sellers agent, mortgage broker, Fannie/Freddie, loan servicer, and the Fed. How many of those employees, on average, have Black skin color? ... Exactly. And it's not like subprime buyers were getting the same interest rates as the rest of us: many were paying Prime+4 (or worse) interest rates, PMI fees, FHA fees, origination fees, all kinds of crap that just piled on. With a 5% downpayment (or less!) many of those properties were basically underwater on Closing Day.
The idea behind lowering the mortgage standards was that prices were shooting up so fast that even if homeowners defaulted, the banks could swoop in and still re-sell the home, if not for a profit, then at least break even. Once we had a major downturn in the housing market (and subsequently the entire economy), that was no longer the case - and people who had no business buying anything other than a condo or townhome ended up losing their home they were woefully unqualified for.
It's not much different than Black People being a disproportionate amount of the prison population, many (no, not ALL or even MOST) there for selling Heroin/Cocaine. How many Black people do you know who own boats? Or could run complex smuggling operations across the border, speak in almost perfect bilingual Spanish, night vision equipment, drones, etc?
