My stock response to this argument:
The 2016 election for President is like a card game Donald and Hillary are playing. They both know the rules, and Donald won the game. Afterwards, there is much complaining, because Hillary was holding a straight flush, which clearly beats the Ace high card that Trump was holding. However, everyone wants to ignore the simple fact that they were playing blackjack.
I can't hate on her too much. As far as I'm concerned, Trump's answer to her debate question was the day he won the election. It was a loaded, curve ball question that would frazzle any other politician, and Trump shut the whole thing down with a 3 word answer before she even got done asking it, and the audience replied with laughter and applause.
This isn't actually impossible... even to do legally, although it's going to be tough.
All you need to do is by the 2022 election cycle, ensure the election of 67% of Trump supporters to both the House and the Senate, and to a majority of 75% of state legislatures. Then it's a simple procedure to pass a constitutional amendment to repeal the 22nd Amendment. As long as they can get the ratification process done within 2 years, Trump should be able to go ahead and run in 2024.
HOWEVER..... Clinton probably could have won a 3rd term, despite all his scandals. Obama was also well liked enough to probably manage more terms if he wanted. It might be a good idea to just let sleeping dogs lie here. Right now, lets focus on 2020 and at least ensure him a 2nd term, and hopefully keep the Senate and with any luck, flip the House back, so many he can take another shot at killing off Obamacare.
It won't really matter. Once the vaccine is available, everyone who wants it will be able to get it. As long as it works, that will be enough to lower the infection rate to the point where it's statistical noise. Once it's below the flu in terms of rates of infection and death, it'll become just another common disease that can be safely ignored, everything can open back up, travel can return to normal, and once in a while, someone will get a really bad cold and go sleep it off while the rest of society forges onward.
Mask mandates will likely be dropped almost everywhere, but some people will keep wearing them for a while and that'll be helpful in its own way. Even if it does nothing to prevent the spread, people can still embrace their false sense of security and power hungry leaders will lose all of their leverage.
Once can hope anyway.
I don't want to sound like I'm defending her, but it seems like there was some serious miscommunication between her and the person she borrowed the credit card from. She did charge that much at the pharmacy, but did so over a year's time. Presumably, the owner of the card would have noticed and put a stop to it LONG before that. So either the spending over an extended period was permitted and later revoked retroactively, or someone is REALLY not paying attention. That probably factored into why she got a plea deal with a light sentence, especially since it includes full restitution.
There's an active DUI case against her now though, and assuming the timing lines up, she would be on probation when it happened (although it happened in a different state). Be interesting to see how that plays out and if she gets her probation revoked if convicted.
At 95 years old, you can die from a strong breeze. And you still have to catch it first. We're still less than 2% of the population infected. So, 1 out of 50 chance of catching the disease, then a 50% of dying if you do catch it. That's 1 in 100 chance that one specific random disease will kill you. At 95, you have a 25% of dying within a year anyway.
Two possibilities. Either this was planned in advance, and the SS has been on top of it from a point long before anyone would have a chance to pull something like that off, or it was impromptu enough that nobody had the time to prepare. In any event, from the moment anyone in that building knew Trump was coming, there were SS eyes on the place.
I'm not sure if anyone has made this connection yet, but it occurs to me that the reason someone put the trump tag on the bear is to encourage certain people to try to remove it, and quite possibly regret that decision.
It's interesting if you actually sit and think about the capability of human engineering against the normal decay rate of infrastructure and the timescales they talk about with regards to global warming.
Bottom line, we have a century for moderate sea level rise. Coastal properties might get flooded/destroyed in that timeframe, but that won't matter, since they will just slowly devalue over time until they eventually become condemned some decades before the water overtakes them... OR... a massive engineering project that will raise the entire elevation of the threatened areas that seems overwhelming in scope, but isn't terribly large given enough time. You could raise the entire state of Florida by 1 ft and it would only require every citizen of the state to dump 1 bucket of dirt per day. I know people are lazy, but most would rather do that than give up driving.
It's not just about virus size, but about the means of transmission. My cheapo mask or bandana isn't going to stop any viruses, but if I sneeze while wearing it, it will prevent all those droplets of water from flying everywhere. My mask itself might be virus infected, but I'm not projecting the virus upon all those around me.
So it might make no real difference, even so, it's a minimal annoyance that doesn't kill economies, so if some people want to wear them, fine. Wear it. It doesn't bother me that you do.
Exactly. If you want to wear one, fine with me. If I want to not wear one, no need to harass me about it.
I'm a bit torn on the issue honestly. Part of me just wants the virus to get exposed to everyone, so everyone can suffer through it, and we'll lose 0.1 % of the population, but everyone else will be immune and life goes on.
But I also see the merits of taking reasonable precautions to prevent from catching and spreading the disease until a vaccine is available. Wearing a mask out in public is annoying, but unlike almost every other measure taken against this disease, it has virtually no economic impact. So wear the damn thing if you feel like it. If you're still wearing it 5 years from now, then maybe we need to have a chat.
It's not the outright fraud that we need to worry about with mail in voting. I don't want voting to be HARD. But I want someone to put in some degree of effort. I want them to actually HAVE AN OPINION on how they want their government to operate and have at least that much motivation in wanting to vote. I want them to decide that it's worth 30 minutes of their life once every 2-4 years to get off the sofa, turn off the TV, drive 2 minutes to the local polling place, and cast a vote, recognizing at least one name on the ballot or at least a political party they believe best represents their views.
If someone is too lazy to make at least that much effort, I DON'T WANT THEM VOTING. If you want this country to turn into a socialist paradise like Venezuela, then that's your right, and you should vote for whoever will best make that dream come true for you. But you need to put in at least that tiny amount of effort to make it happen.
What I DON'T want happening is for the mail to be delivered into a household, have 4-5 packets sitting on the table for every registered voters in the house, and the kids, who can't be assed to go out and vote have someone else make that choice for them. Worse yet, I don't want someone else in the house supervising the filling out of ballots by other members of the family. It's a private vote for a reason. It's YOUR vote. YOU get up, go out and vote for who YOU want and be part of the system. Or don't. That's your choice too. It's not someone else's.
I think the DNC figured out pretty early on that Trump was going to be almost impossible to beat, at least with the current selection of candidates. The best choice they have at this point is to put up a solid base candidate that will lose, but still draw enough voters out so he can provide coattails to the House candidates and they can hopefully hold onto the House, and therefore prevent Trump from passing any legislation. However, I don't think they expected it to be quite this bad.
I'm actually kind of impressed that the market for the most part seems to be trying to at least level off. Like it knows there's rough waters ahead but at the same time realizes that a recovery will be swift once it's allowed to occur.
This isn't really all that complicated. Soweto was the name of his stepfather. There are any number of good reasons why he might have changed his last name in those circumstances, especially as a kid. The real question is why he changed it back later. However, it's really not something worth getting hung up on.
