Trump was betrayed by those closest to him. If he is at fault at all, it's for ever listening to Republican politicians and consultants. He didn't betray us; they did.

Republicans are fools if they think they can not fight for Trump and still keep Trump's base. If Trump gets ousted, it's time for a new party.

There's a third possibility: he's wilfully telling some truths and some lies in order to draw lawsuits that would lead, in discovery, to finding evidence confirming the truths but also the lies. He would likely be found guilty of defamation, but his few lies told could uncover many more truth's. He could be making himself a sacrificial lamb for the truth's sake.
