People who aspire to be a politician either think too much or too little about themselves. Those who think they are a living deity don't care enough about the people they represent and those who actually care about the people don't have what it takes to win so end up as staffers and grunt workers for those that do.
Meanwhile the majority of people that have some realistic semblance of their own worth that would actually be the best at the job are smart enough not to step one foot into the slimy arena.
Seriously so just ask them the reasons why they take the views they do. It really wrecks havoc on their psychy when you combine that approach with calling out their strawman points as well as their insistence call to authority fallacy. Also, don't forget to point out the whataboutism when used and use concise language that uses phrases like "I understand, but I feel you may..."
If you really want to have them shaking start saying their talking points just a split second before them. Wouldn't suggest that on people you care about as it is a dick move.

It boils down to a lack of higher order logic usually out of cognitive cowardice. Dunning-Krueger effect is thrown out often without understanding the why behind it.
Simply stated, highly intelligent individuals have the ability to understand understand the why and how(second order logic) of actions and can understand the reasons why people act the way they do even if irrational. Low IQ people only look at the surface(first order logic) of actions When you have no clue why people act the way they do the gut instinct(self defense mechanism) is they are dumb.
