I do think that civil war WOULD make it much easier for someone like China and their allies to take over. So even if our scenerio is NOT happening it still makes sense from a game theory point of view. I think we underestimate how badly THEY want us divided and how much chaos would have ensued if Trump and military made a move earlier. Even if they were in the right the media would have still convinced half the nation or so it was a coup.
