They killed people in New York, big time. I believe it was 80% of people who got ventilated didn’t get off. Their “best approach” since it was a “novel”(its the flu) virus was to ventilate anyone and everyone that came to the hospital and had symptoms. Their reasoning was that Corona positive people don’t breathe out the virus when ventilated, in turn protecting the health care workers themselves to make sure they didn’t get infected. They were worried about staff and being overrun cause they thought this thing was super deadly. Turns out ventilators are super deadly for just mildly sick but otherwise healthy people. They knew nebulizers or rebreathers would’ve been better but those have potential to aerosolize the virus. They scared themselves from their own bad practices
