Soldier here - most Soldiers and Officers are right wing. Many SENIOR Officers and NCOs are moderates that are interested in personal advancement.
It's the DoD civilians and the civilian appointees that are the troublesome lot.
Part of the problem is with the concept of Career Soldiering - we have to shoot our bosses and livelihoods right out of the window because we can't exactly just go back to the farm or to our civilian jobs like the Guard or Reserve guys can.
