Fear is already achieved when the guilty has been delivered their sentences. If this wasn't the case, then there would be a lot more serial killers running around in states that have the death penalty.
Also, look at Japan. They use the death penalty, and typically conduct executions via hanging. Japan is one of the safest societies in the world, bar-none.
There's no reason that we can't use hanging, lethal injection, or firing squad on the guilty parties. Anything more then that, and we'll begin a slippery slope towards barbarism, and I don't know about you, but I enjoy living in a society that respects the rule of law.

I have no issue with the death penalty*, just needs to be done in accordance with the 8th Amendment. Drawn, and Quartered is cruel, and unusual.
Once proven in the court of law that the guilty parties are guilty by jury, your options are 1) lethal injection, 2) hanging, or 3) firing squad. That's it.
Didn't know that being against cruel, and unusual death sentences is somehow being against the death penalty...
