That’s not the point. In reality the hospital applies, from the government(taxpayers) for a tax credit for the $900 mark down, and the insurance company then bills the insurance group extra for the amount they ‘saved’ (by negotiating a lower price) But the effect is exactly the same as I outlined.
The customer/taxpayer gets screwed multiple times.
It’s more than price gouging. It’s a full on rent seeking scheme, otherwise known as a racket, that would be illegal in any other industry.
