If for self defense I assume a pistol.
- comfort (grip/trigger, size, weight, for you)
- ease of use (trigger pull, releasing slide lock, reloading etc)
- maintenance (special tools? Easy to disassemble)
There's your main three by far. The rest is immaterial.
Depends on what you want. Hunting? Self defense? Target? Competition? Skeet? Go to a gun shop near you. Talk to the salesperson behind the counter (get a foid card if needed in your state). Handle a bunch of guns. Find something that feels comfortable if a pistol. Rent a gun and shoot it. Talk to your friends. Shoot their guns if you really have friends w guns. Etc. Type #guns or #2a into instagram and start reading for months. The advice is endless. Getting advice here is unnecessary and not proper.

There are "journalists" out there who are not really journalists, nor impartial. They have a bias, an agenda, possibly paid or personally involved in criminal acts against the People
They use their status, their political soap box and reach to disarm and mislead the People. Any and all who will listen.
