We bit the bullet 5 years ago and bought a propane powered whole house generator from Generac. Cost us $5,000. But, it was worth the price compared to the hardships neighbors suffered for up to 2.5 weeks without power. We supplied neighbors with water for their horses, etc. When your water comes from a well and you lose power you can't flush toilets or run water. Us rural dwellers depend on our electric run wells for our water. We're not in the boonies either - just minutes outside Harrisburg, PA. (We all, 6 homes, have generators now. Don't depend on the government- because you can't!
