Have you searched any of the battlefields in Illinois? On private property with permission, naturally?
Seems like Illinois was the local for a number of somewhat random battles that involved the French, Native Americans, English, and US.
When I was a kid, I stayed overnight at a private residence in MIssissippi where a Civil War had taken place. The homeowners walked some of us through their several acre, heavily wooded property and pointed out where some of the fiercest action had occurred.
Then they took us in their garage, and showed us coffee cans full of casings, buttons, belt buckles, gun frames and other metal objects they had found with metal detectors. Hundreds of objects. I've never forgotten it.
