I understand firsthand what you’re saying about not believing in God; I was also like you once. Know that I say the following without any snark but instead with sincere transparency. I guess what I’d like to share is that from the perspective of someone who has accepted that we all need God to be whole, the crutch isn’t a point of shame; it’s the most obvious and practical solution to the problem. To hear the statement that belief that Christ is who He claims to be is a crutch feels like an obvious statement that confers upon the believing hearer a warm feeling similar to an internal chuckle. It’s kind of like “lolyes, yes it is.”
The Atheist position appears from the perspective of the theist as one that is missing the bigger picture, and refuses to look. Metaphorically speaking, they appear as though they are willfully choosing to limp, all the while having full access to the crutch that would make their existence that much better. Sure, they may arguably, capably ambulate to the destinations they set out to reach, but they would do a much more efficient job of it and have an easier go at it if they just chose to reach out and grab the crutch. Again, it’s not an attack, just an insight from a different perspective.
In case you’re curious what changed my mind, it was chiefly two things: 1)After examining the evidence for myself, I could not find any reasons to disprove the established facts surrounding the resurrection of Christ, and the life-changing effects these facts had on the lives of those who claimed to have witnessed them firsthand. 2)Though not a geneticist by training, I have taken several graduate level genetics courses, enough to convince me of the following. The VERY delicate DNA molecule that contains all if the information necessary to form in development, maintain in homeostasis, and allow an organism to propagate, not only could not have formed spontaneously, it could not even have maintained or propagated itself had it done so. This fact raises a variation on the old question. Which came first, the DNA that formed the proteins and organelles, or the proteins and organelles that maintain and fuel the propagation of the DNA?

If you’d like to examine for yourself some of the evidences I used, I recommend Can we trust the Gospels by Peter J Williams (it’s 124 pages of nothing but hard hitting evidence, starting with contemporary non-Christian sources in the first chapter), and The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel, a formerly Atheist investigative journalist for the Chicago Tribune who set out to disprove the facts surrounding the resurrection, but ended up affirming them. Whatever you decide to do, I wish you the best pede.
