The big difference that changed us was the internet.
Most of us can handle ourselves responsibly on it, but we've all seen the social-media-obsessed culture devolve into attention-desperate zombies. Lots of us can ration our time on it, or abstain altogether. But it programmed a generation (and then some) to become addicted to being waist deep in everybody else's business.
But that but isn't the worst part. Corporations and politicians seized this segment of the population for their gain - whether it be for money or votes. Preying on the weak, the built an empire of slaves. Worse yet, willing slaves. They pushed radical ideas and the idiots ate it because they thought "look how many likes, I'd better agree". It's their desperation for acceptance, and to appear moral - as defined by the overlords.
So yeah I miss the 80's tbh
