They're calling it an "assault rifle" of course, but according to this report he bought a Ruger AR-556 pistol on March 16.
Was he a naturalized citizen? He had an assault charge against him in 2018 that he pled guilty to. I'm just wondering if that assault charge, plus if he was not a citizen, should have effected his ability to pass a background check, or did he even obtain the gun legally.
