"best" is difficult. My suggestion, look for VPNs that keep no records, have a lot of traffic, and are based out of the country and out of 5 eyes locations. AirVPN, BolehVPN come to mind. There are others.
ISP will see you connect to an IP that will be identifiable as a VPN on a lookup, but that's all they can see. No traffic information. Nothing about what you connect to from there. Being out of 5 eyes countries means that anything requiring a search warrant will require more paperwork and permission - unless you're a big fish, that's probably too much effort, time, and cost.
The Internet never forgets. A VPN can't fix that. It takes work to move away from big tech, and even then, there's probably an electronic paper trail somewhere.
I forget sometimes how far our system has fallen when the younger crowd doesn't know how to deal with books (God forbid, the Dewey Decimal system), more can't read cursive writing or an analog clock... At least some are trying. Past generations have failed them.

It is a Virtual Private Network. Basically, you connect to the VPN and it hides (encrypts) you data transfers online as well as providing you with a different IP address (you'll have the VPN host provider's address).
There are many of them out there, but you want to use a provider that does NOT keep logs. Preferably one that has machines overseas (provides at least some rudimentary legal protections). Do some homework on those. I hesitate to list specific provider recommendations in the clear. We may be entering a really bad period, ya know...

IMO, it's like the little commies - you want to buy some land and set up a communist group, well, go ahead. It's when you force everyone else to buy your ideology that's a problem. Live your own life based on your beliefs. You have no right to harm others' property, life, or livelihood.
