Might be a controversial opinion here but how about people who want to have bigger family gatherings just get everybody tested first? I was able to get a finger prick test before for $20.
If you look around for test materials they aren't too hard to find. If everybody gets tested and continues distancing while they wait for results, there's absolutely no reason people who test negative couldn't go to Thanksgiving dinner with family.
