An 11 year old cried today. He had been sitting in the car hitting scan on the radio while waiting for his mom to come out of a store. He found one channel on AM where they weren’t preaching or talking about sports. He noted the station was clear and without static unlike the others. The voice of friendly authority came through the speakers and this 11 year old kid was caught up in what this voice was saying. It sounded like his dad he thought.
Finally his mother came out of the store and the kid made her listen to what he found. When his dad got home, the 11 year old told his dad he had to hear this guy, “he sounded so much like you, dad” he told his father. That voice was none other than Rush Limbaugh. And from that time, as the 11 year old grew he and Rush shared many adventures.
Rush was there with him when he went to college, graduated, worked in politics, got sick of it and went to law school. Rush was there the morning after every election. He assured him it would be OK. That America was too big, the dream still existed, and our shining light on the hill had not been extinguished. Rush spent every Thanksgiving in the kitchen with his George Washington proclamation and the real story of Thanksgiving. At some point the 11 year old realized that he had a better relationship with rush than he did his own father. The man Rush sounded so much like could not compete with 3 hours everyday. Nobody could.
That 11 year old, now a grown man, has been weeping with every thought of this news. My dad was diagnosed with cancer a few months before I heard Rush, as an 11 year old, sitting in that parking lot. My father beat his prognosis and is with me now. I pray for Rush Limbaugh to have the strength to never give up, never believe he can’t win, and know his time is still needed as we selfishly need him.
