If it would have started in the news as “there’s a harsh flu spreading around” then most rational people would have expressed caution to those at risk and for those living with people at risk, and there would be no shut down. CDC admit that it could be positive for any of the coronavirus strains. Flu has been occasionally tied to loss of smell and taste for years. All coinciding with covid numbers. no spike in all cause deaths for the population, just a rebranding of cause to fit a narrative.
