The original comment was that Christian altruism is a thing. Someone responded that Christians only do good because they believe that’s how they attain salvation. This is what I was responding to. The idea that Christians think they can buy their way into heaven.
I am NOT saying good deeds aren’t a necessary part of the Christian life. They are. But Christians don’t do good deeds because they think it’s what gets them saved. They are already saved! Christians do good works because their faith is not dead.
You’re not wrong there, but we were talking about salvation. Specially, people doing good deeds to get into heaven. Good deeds are absolutely necessary for a healthy spiritual life and are the natural consequence of real faith. But you don’t buy your way into heaven with them. The blood of Christ paid for our salvation. Nothing we are capable of would be sufficient payment; we are all sinners and we all fall short of earning our way into heaven on our own. God the Father sacrificed His perfect Son for this.
I think you misunderstand, friend. The passage you link is describing how good deeds are a byproduct of faith. Good deeds are not what buys you salvation. Don’t get the cause and effect reversed. See the book of Romans for more on this.
It is not merely opinion, but fact, to say the overwhelming majority of Christian denominations/faiths do teach that salvation is not attained by good deeds. Salvation is a gift that we do not actually earn, according to the Christian Bible.
