yeah just some tube forms with a poured footer will do. i built mine up over a basement so i embedded plates on the north and south walls to land the container posts onto... then weld them in place.
learn the skills, it's not that difficult. a cheap stick welder and a disk cutter can install a window in a container house.
building costs right now are insane, building a shipping container home right now would save you a ton of money on the sheeting, OSB is at a record high right now, it's almost cheaper to buy plywood.
once you have the foundation poured and cured, you can place the containers on it and weld it to the pad (assuming you were smart enough to embed plates in the concrete before it cured) and be done in a day.
next day you can use a rented telehandler to place pre-built trusses.
day after that you can roof it.
you can have a dried in structure with endless lockable storage in a few weeks once the foundation is ready then take your sweet time finishing it out as you can afford it.
stick built shit takes months to get dried in, your labor costs are insane compared to flying in some containers and working on it at your own pace.
delivery isn't that expensive, you can get a 40foot high cubed dropped on your property for around 3k- 4k depending on how far you live from the place you purchased. much cheaper at the coasts, but there are customs clearance centers and hubs all over the country that you can purchase cans from... it's not like you have to have them special shipped in from longbeach to maine to build one of these.
you don't need to find someone who can cut holes, you can watch youtube for an hour and learn how to do it yourself.

There's a ton of great stuff you can do with containers, but i've heard a lot of problems with putting them underground without fantastic drainage all around and some thick rubberized coating on the metal that's going to be in contact with the ground or ground water.
Just like with burying propane tanks, i would also use an anode bag they bury along with it.
cor-ten steel is great in marine environments because the "rust" actually provides a protective layer that protects the metal below... just like aluminum does.
i'd try to keep them above ground if you can, make everything below ground reinforced concrete and provide lots of drainage to keep things nice and dry.
the key when designing structures is to try to ensure all the loadbearing is done on the corner posts, and also to understand that once you begin cutting into the corrugated side walls they no longer act as supports and will compromise the rigidity of the structure.
always reinforce BEFORE cutting openings or removing walls.
one nice trick to remove entire walls is to run I beams from post to post, stich weld the containers roof rail to the beam, then remove the wall once things are supported.
also, always make sure you at least seal the floors, or remove them entirely and replace with concrete. replacing with concrete allows you to run radiant in floor heating so it's a great reason to do it.
Shipping containers have been a staple in the prepper community for years before hipsters started making tiny homes out of them.
As you said, they are cheap and you can make just about anything out of them.
All you need is a little closed cell foam insulation to make them energy efficient and you're golden.

The best part about containers is they are cheap and you can stack them up into a giant frame on foundation and finish it out as you go.
Instead of adding containers in the future... you build it all before hand and then invest the money to finish the containers out in the future.
Containers only cost you around 3k delivered.
Just make sure you buy 40 foot high cube containers so you have 9.5 feet inside height instead of just 8.
