Don't know if still same but decades ago, when I lived in Illinois, you had to register your guns and, to buy ammunition, you had to show that you had a registered gun of that caliber to purchase that caliber ammo. About same as registering the ammo. I didn't register my guns and found it easier to buy ammo in Wisconsin.
