Poor EU countries have been able to get cheap loans and financial aid financed by the richer EU countries to develop their countries. The richer EU countries benefit from it by having new markets to sell their goods and services or use for cheaper labor. There is a loss of sovereignty but it has allowed a lot of money to enter those countries which were going nowhere before. I have mixed feelings about it, but it's not all bad.
