You're not wrong. The difference is good faith. I have every reason to believe Trump is using the normal American use of the word. I also have every reason to believe this op ed author is badly motivated and might attempt a veiled insult.
It's like if I'm hanging out with my friends and someone calls me "bitch" I'll react very differently than if someone cuts me off in traffic and then calls me "bitch". Same word, different context.
In the US, we use "Folk" to mean "people", but actually the word has a much more specific meaning. In particular, it's a bastardization of the word "Volk"...which refers to anyone in the german cultural block - anyone from the Rhine to Ukraine basically. The concept was really popular among nazis.
Basically - 50% chance the writer is just ignorant and 50% chance he thinks he's being clever and subtly calling us nazis to our face.
This general is loyal to his country and to his president. If they try to force Trump out of the white house illegally, they'll have to deal with this man commanding a million patriots.

Yea, I think it's always worth trying to talk to people. Jesus tell us to be patient and keep love in our hearts for everyone... and that's sometimes really hard. At the same time, we've also gotta be willing to stand up against evil and fight for what we know is right... and that's also really hard. It's a balance I'm still trying to get the hang of :-) .

The more honest ones will just laugh in your face and admit that they don't really believe any of that BS and are just using the narrative to get personal power.
