People who wear a mask are not protected significantly if nobody around them is wearing a mask. That is what was tested.
What was not tested was whether if everyone is wearing a mask, if there is some protection for the group based on reduced transmission.
For transmission to occur, there must be a source and a recipient. This study says that if only the recipient is masked but potential sources are not, there is no reduced transmission.
Liberals may see this as a reason for everyone to have to wear a mask, since if you are the only person at the store wearing one, you are not really protected. However, it may be true that general masking has no significant effect. That needs its own trial.

Unlike many here I am not opposed to getting a vaccine against Covid. I have my elderly parents in law in my home, and while they will also get the vaccine, I would rest more comfortably knowing I am less likely to transmit to them or my patients.
But...
I think I might wait for the more traditional vaccines which may be a couple of months later. Those do not use mRNA. I would rather have a vaccine where the long term effects are well understood.
Theoretically the mRNA degrades quickly and just hijacks the cell’s machinery to produce the antigen. I don’t see a reason why there would be long term side effects. But I like empirical data.
