So the futures of our young people were hamstrung to preserve the lives of the old and sick? That's the exact opposite of the natural order. The adults are supposed to do whatever they can to preserve the life and future of the young.
Quarantining everyone, including healthy and young, just to protect the old and vulnerable, is selfish and short sighted (year perspective instead of generational perspective).

China wants to be the superpower, hard to progress towards this goal if they are falling far behind due to trade war
Release virus to drag down world economies to try and level the playing field
From that perspective, the virus was pretty effective. Highly contagious, long incubation period, not very deadly for working-age people. Preserve the workforce while inciting panic.
Although the data point of 20-something million Chinese cell phone users dropping out kind of contradicts the virus being not very lethal. Two further speculations: China has terrible air quality, especially in the industrial cities. Like it will make your lungs ache if you have fresh clean lungs. So maybe it was unexpectedly lethal because basically everyone has compromised lung function. Alternatively, the virus is more deadly for certain racial groups. I'd like to see death statistics by race, might be interesting.
Lol they wouldn't be able to handle the crisis any better. Sure the economy took a huge hit, but it's very clearly China's fault, and I believe people are optimistic about a huge rebound.
Just because the economy is getting wrecked, doesn't automatically mean people will vote for the opposition party.
