I've been asking the same question myself. I would assume by doing it this way it eliminates the SCOTUS, but we know the Potus legal team is taking a two pronged attack. Some mentioned if they selected electors, they could be influinced by the left and the SCOTUS may be the most fool proof way to get it done.
