When identifying your nationality and race, say in a online discussion, its appropriate to say black American. IMO it should be reversed, so as not to imply that there different types of Americans. For example "I am an American black male".
I'm convinced African-American is mostly said by whites who think they know what is offensive for groups they don't belong to.
