Not how it works...history (civil war) is a great example. If a split were to occur, it would take time and most likely you'd see military members fall back to their state guard if they can. This isn't Rome with Cesear, it's way more complicated than that. Also, military should be apolitical, although there is a heavy trend right now of liberal policies and people being outspoken in the military.
