Eric Blair (his real name) was a young aristocrat who worked for British intelligence. He was an operator in Spain during the Spanish civil war, when he realized that British intel was actually promoting the socialists while appearing to be fighting then. He was disillusioned at the conspiracy and wrote Animal Farm and 1984 as a way to warn the public against the evils of totalitarianism and communism. Orwell was his pen name. He thought he was safe by putting the message in fictional form, but he still died shortly after publishing 1984.
Animal Farm is a satire that lampoons the hypocrisy of socialism and demonstrates in simple terms how it's used against the very workers who support it. You should re-read the book with all this in mind. It's a classic.
This information used to be common knowledge--they taught both books to us in high school, almost 40 years ago. It's sad what has happenened to education.
